Read this a while back and I was thinking how football can do many things...what a game!
Adelaide United makes attack victim's day!
Thursday, 2 November, 2006 - 3:47PM
The Adelaide United Football Club has given Sudanese boy Giir Mou a day he won’t forget with a special presentation at Hindmarsh Stadium today in front of the Adelaide Media.
Giir, 15, was attacked by a gang and hit by a car while he was playing soccer in a local park back in late July, resulting in him being in a coma for three days and hospitalised for two months.
As part of the process to lift Giir’s spirits after the attack, Adelaide United coach John Kosmina invited Giir to training and introduced him to the playing squad, presenting him with a signed Adelaide United shirt, scarfe and cap plus memberships for his family for the remainder of the season. Kosmina said the club had come together after hearing about Giir’s traumatic experience.
“A terrible thing happened to him and we as a club wanted to support him because he’s lucky to be standing next us today really. We want to help him to try and feel better about himself, Kosmina said.
“This sort of thing takes sport back to its roots. It’s not all about money and professionalism, it’s about community spirit and I think it’s nice that we remind ourselves that there’s a human side to it as well. We look at ourselves at Adelaide United as the people’s club, a team for the community so it’s nice to do something like this.”
Giir is a Sudanese refugee who arrived in Adelaide two years ago with his mother, three brothers and sister to get away from his war-ravaged homeland.
