Blueprint for Success - Craig Foster speaks some sense!
Something has roused me out of blog slumber.
Australia u/17s have been knocked out of the u/17 World Cup after their defeat to Mexico 3-0 a couple days ago. After losing the first match against Turkey 1-0, their last game is meaningless. With the A-League in full swing and the Australia World Cup qualifier coming up, the match may be overlooked. But what it shows is the complete downfall of the Australia's youth set up in the last decade. When I was growing up, I would look forward to staying up or waking up early to watching the youth tournaments. Unlike the full internationals, Australia was always competitive in youth tournaments and had young exciting players who were actually good to watch. Who could forgot Ned Zelic's goal from an impossible angle against Holland to lead them to victory. AGAINST HOLLAND! A world football powerhouse! To indicate how backwards we have gone, you just had to see Australia-Holland in the recent u/20 World Cup. Beaten 3-0 comfortable, it was almost embarassing. We never even looked like getting near their goal. While they had players who were playing for Ajax, Arsenal, Feyenoord etc, our top players were struggling the old NSL.
Thankfully, the u/17s elimination hasn't gone completely unnoticed. Craig Foster in the paper said that it was 'rubbish' and the football we have been playing is 'crap'. I've heard him before on the World Game talk about the way kids aged around 10 years old are trained. Running, running and more running. Kids that age should be on the ball for the whole training. What the hell is the point of making them run the whole training? Kids that age run around the whole day anyway so they don't need fitness training. The problems start that early in the development. Players grow up to be machines with no technique or flair.
Former coach Les Scheinflug who led the youth teams through success (even taking the u/17s to the World Cup final just 5 years ago) has also called for heads to roll.
-there are "too many non-football" people in Football Federation Australia; said we are stuck with an "outdated English football mentality"
-"We have to get back to the basics of teaching techniques, skills, vision and speed. Bring in South American and French coaches.
A good example of a proper set up is in France. Gerard Houllier was in charge of the French youth set up in Clairfontaine in the 90s and basically they had a certain philosphy about the football their national teams would play, from the youth to the full team. This provided consistency throughout the whole set up and most importantly, produced technically gifted players who played the game properly. This also facilitated easier changing of coaches:
-Even if the Federation suddenly decides to appoint a different national coach, the team the philosophy and the continuity are already in place.
France in the 90s after the Platini-peroid in the 80s were rubbish. They failed to even make World Cup 94. However the generation that came out of Clairefontain won World Cup 98 and EURO 2000 and have arguably produced the best player of our generation, Zidane.
And even after failing in 2001, we kept on with Frank bloody Farina. Seriously he set football back in this country 10 years. People may say if we don't make it, that Guus Hiddink is a waste of money, but when you look at what he has got to work with then it puts it into perspective. Australia struggled to beat Iraq and Indonesia because they have absolutely no idea how to play. He played players like Emerton over Culina just because of reputation.
CHANGES HAVE TO MADE. OVERHAUL THE YOUTH SETUP. GET RID OF THE ENGLISH MENTALITY AND GET COACHES WHO FOCUS ON TECHNIQUE AND KEEPING POSSESSION OF THE BALL!!!
Another thing I can't stand is all the morons who say the English Premier League is the best league in the world. Well if you go in terms of which the most predictable, boring, non-imaginative, kick and run league then yes it wins hands down.
And the worst thing is the amount of coverage it gets in Australia. I seriously reckon there is some conspiracy where the Australian Football Federation sold their soul to England in the 90s and basically said we will base our whole setup on theres and give their league maximum coverage.
What the hell has England won since I've been alive? ..................................................................
NOTHING
People need to watch the Spanish and even the Italian league to a degree. Technique, skill, flair and Ronaldinho!! They actually keep possession of the ball and don't just boot it forward when their right or left back gets the ball.
No wonder our youth teams are crap.
Even Adelaide United are crap to watch. I will support them no matter what but jebus...cmon Kosmina seeing United scrap through for another hard fought 1-0 victory gets boring after a while. Queensland Roar are the best team I have watched so far but they won't win anything.
Anyway what a rant.
In summary Australian football sucks cause all we produce now are players who are boring and basically an English clone.
The late Johnny Warren always stated that we have to learn so much more from the South Americans. The 'beautiful' game. The way football is meant to played. Fun and carefree.
Saying all that, CMON WE GOTTA BEAT THOSE SOUTH AMERICAN BURRITOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmm, some good points although perhaps a little excessive on the England bashing- what have India won lately?
Or more importantly what have Spain won lately? You claim that the Spanish Primera Liga is one of the best in the world however their national team aren't particularly well adapted to bringing home the bacon (or burrito). This I feel is a pretty weak point on which to base your judgement of a national league.
I agree that certain aspects of the EPL have become predictable (ie. the winner will be one of about 3 clubs), however this is due to the influx of fucking foreigners who come and buy the clubs, pumping all their money into them to bring in as many foreign players as possible (I no longer consider Chelsea English).
When the English league system is referred to as the best in the world I believe you must look at the WHOLE setup, not only the EPL. Below the EPL are an extra 3 professional divisions and then the conference leagues. There are no less than 2 cup competitions in which teams from the EPL are pitched against those of lower divisions, conference leagues and even lower teams from regional divisions. Both the league cup and the FA cup regularly throw David and Goliath into the arena together and we often see David coming off best. For example this week we saw a host of upsets in league cup fixtures including Man City going down 3-0 to lowly 3rd Division Doncaster Rovers.
The solution in Oz I believe is to model the setup on European leagues (not only the EPL), and above all steer clear of turning the whole thing into a glorified American style show and dance. For starters I hate seeing cheerleaders at football games (it's just not football), secondly I hate these gay names that they give the teams, its football not bloody basketball and in my opinion the following names should be scrapped:
Queensland ROAR
Melbourne VICTORY
Newcastle United JETS
New Zealand KNIGHTS
Also I don't understand the establishment of teams based upon huge geographic areas such as Queensland or New Zealand. Its just stupid; the A-League should be encouraging the establishment of more teams in the future, but how can this happen in either New Zealand or Queensland when these two teams already exist claiming to represent the whole damn place. The future of the A-Legue depends primarily on support from the public, but then increased representation through increased participation from new clubs. The following clubs/teams should in my opinion be established and included in any future A-League:
1) A second Sydney team (the city is large enough to support at least two)
2) A second Melbourne team (read above)
3) A Canberra team
4) A Tasmanian team (Hobart Town/United/Athletic?? affectionately known as "the devils" with reference to local fauna??) Think about it, there currently exists no Tasmanian team in any national league (AFL/NRL etc), a huge market exists down there to be tapped and if they are going to include New Zealand then they should surely include Tasmania.
Furthermore, the FFC should establish an annual FA cup style competition including not only A-League clubs, but state premier league and amatuer clubs also. This is one of the best ways to allow the cream (talent) to rise to the top.
Anyway I'm all ranted out, the end.

Mad rant!
"I hate seeing cheerleaders at football games"
True that! Makes it look Cheapy McCheap (which is what the A-league is anyway)
"I hate these gay names that they give the teams"
Double true that!
Shaun, why don't YOU become coach of Aust U17's???
I'm serial!!
You probably COULD do a better job of leading them to glory!!
And you could make M1 your best player!! DONE!!!!!!
NEXT LIFE!

Sorry johnny i didnt mean to bag England that much!
I take your point bout Spain not winning anything as well but i mean that there is 10 times more to be learnt from the Spanish league than the Premier League.
In Australia, we produce players who are perfect physical specimens in every sport. The physical attributes are there in young players but not enough technical ability. Every time Australia comes against a team that is crap and puts 10 players behind the ball, we have no idea how to open them up. Because players aren't taught here how to keep the ball and wait for an opportunity to happen. Its always at one tempo and one dimensional.
In regards to your point about more A-League clubs being introduced, its a bit of yes and no. Its the first year and if there more than 8 clubs, I dont think there is enough support at the moment to get decent crowds. We got start small and build the support from there. Theres no point having 2 teams from Qld if they will only get 5000 each (At the moment they get around 15,000 so far).
They are trying get the infrastructure here right and then we can build from it. There no way this year we could have implemented European style leagues (say 2 divisions) as its just not feasible yet.
Also we cant have a Tasmanian team. They suck at everything. Just look at Ricky Ponting. The A-league is a new start but they also realised this was the last chance of a proper football league here being setup. Therefore keeping it simple.
However it is interesting to see in future, cause like you said there isnt much room for any more teams to be added. Especially the way teams have been marketed (Adelaide United - Team for all South Australians etc). Hopefully a cup comp will be added once everything is in full swing.
"True that! Makes it look Cheapy McCheap (which is what the A-league is anyway)"
Nah youre alright Tom. Go back to crappy tennis. How bout come to an A-league game first and then pass judgement.

Remember how I went to multiple United games - and they were pretty feeble........
The best thing about it were the Churros!!
So I don't even wanna go to any 'A-league' games anyway if they're just going to be that feeble (which they undoubtedly will be........)
I tried, oh man, how I tried - but zero................too feeble....

Shaun, my point was not to have included more clubs from the outset, rather to include more as time goes on. For instance include 2 more next season and so on until it reaches a number (even) like 12 or 16.
With regards to Queensland Roar (someone please change that name!), although they are averaging 15,000 per home game you cannot tell me that any of those come from anywhere outside of Brisbane. How many "diehard" fans do you think there are coming down from places like Cairns, Townsville, the Gold Coast or even bloody Mount Isa??!! We shouldn't kid ourselves, it is a Brisbane team and should be named accordingly- "Brisbane something-or-other", hell even just "Brisbane" would be better than "Roar".
You say that they are just trying to keep it simple at the beginning, but I would suggest that it is anything but simple. I am all for a joint New Zealand-Australia league, but it is absurd to include what essentially amounts to a national team (New Zealand Knights [another stupid name]) in a national competition. I have a simple formula for such situations:
National teams belong in International competitions; Local/regional teams belong in national competitions.
Furthermore, the "New Zealand Knights" are based in Auckland and the same Queensland paradigm applies; how many "diehard" fans do you think there are going to home games from Wellington, Dunedin, Christchurch etc. The current situation leaves no space for inclusion of clubs from these cities at some time in the future.
The current set-up although well intentioned has some fundamental flaws that are going to have to be rectified in the future if there is to be any hope of including more clubs. The key here I think is geographic representation and tapping areas that AFL/NRL are too snobbish to do so. There exist no national AFL/NRL teams representing Cairns, Townsville, the Gold Coast, Canberra (AFL, they DO have rugby) and Hobart. If Football clubs were setup in these places then it would give the locals something to identify with on a national scale and they would actually be able to go to home games. You can argue that they won't get very good crowds, but I believe with no other AFL/NRL competitor they would be very popular and besides with the right stadia in place, then relatively small crowds (5,000-10,000) would not be such a problem. Afterall what is the fucking point watching Sydney FC in the Sydney Football Stadium (or "Aussie Stadium") with a crowd of only 5,000? it generates absolutely no atmosphere. Thats why "boutique stadiums" like Hindmarsh are good because although small they are capable of generating atmosphere and you're close to the action.
This leads to my last closing comment, football (soccer) should NEVER ever be played in the MCG, especially national team games. I am even hesitant about Stadium Australia (or "Telstra Stadium").
oh oh oh.... this is my REAL last point- lets end this shitty corporate naming of stadiums and everything, I even heard this week that the Adelaide Lightning WNBL team have been renamed the "Adelaide Fellas" after their major sponsor. Oh god! I am so glad I am not a basketball fan, I would have to kill myself.

john probably the most important reason for not many teams is trying to improve the standard of the league. lets face it, all the best players in the country are overseas, so there isnt a huge talent pool to pick from.
i still dont agree with 2 teams in qld. yes there are alot people outisde brisbane but most of them are rugby dominated.
how many people in Australia go to football matches? you need to get general sport followers to games so you need to give them a high quality product (hence why i think less teams = better talent) NSL crowds were crap. even adelaide united crowds have been about 5000 short of capacity.
another reason is to enter the a-league clubs have to put a shitload of money to get in. which ensures teams wont play for just a couple years and go under. the current setup means that clubs wont survive with small crowds.
also new zealand has to have a team in the a-league. otherwise what do NZ players have to aim for? also new zealand football supporters would have nothing to watch other than their substandard league. football interest would be dwindle and then they will keep losing to soloman islands.
i agree with your point bout the small stadiums. there no point sydney playing in a 40000 capacity stadium (they are still getting 20000 though).
anyways we can talk bout it till the beavers come home, but the most important thing is to get out to the games and support the club!!!
thats right tom im gonna force you to come to one game this year.

Done!
I'll gladly swindle (as long it's not anytime during the next 8 weeks!!!!)
.....but you shall have to lure me with Churros....and the possiblity of more Churros to come......

good points all round. Sorry to be a stick in the mud.... but, Townsville are represented in the NRL by the North Quennsland Cowboys, based at Dairy Farmers Stadium, Townsville. Gold Coast are to be represented from the 2007 season by the Titans. After dragging benind in providing Queensland fans, some would say the the most diehard fans, real representation in the National? Rugby League, it seems the NRL are determined to expand. Left asking why now, from a football (real football) view point it can be considered the NRL have taken a lesson out of the thumping they have recieved from the AFL's expansion policy. They would have been aware of the NSL's inevitable death and rebirth on a much grander scale, and are reinforcing their traditional strongholds. The A League would truely struggle to flourish in an environment where clubs had to pull their supporters from other codes. Undoubtedly, there has always been a strong supporter base for football and always will be, however in this great brown land of ours where traveling teams must cover huge distances incuring big expenses and must play at stadiums capable of holding crowds to cover these costs, the broadest possible market must be targeted, especially with the sport being left in such a fraglie predicament. The fans who have always been there are looking for the best quality league we can produce, while teams will hope to sway additional fans putting money in the coffers. While it does seem silly to have teams representing thousands of kms, it seems to be the only way to make our quality product feesable at this current time. A good example is the NBL. The 36ers have moulded their schedule around the AFL, while the rest of the league went gung-ho in tackling the dominate code head on. The 36ers have consistently finished in the top 3, while producing good local talent and attracting quality imports, making the attendances the best in the league. Meanwhile, as the NBL struggles in the rest of the uninterested country, Australian basketball went down the crapper. We had some of the most exciting young talent in the world, but our national team wasnt worth a pinch of shit.... and then we lost to New Zealand... Remind you of any other sport?
In conclusion, I really am quite drunk, but ask you to get behind the team for all South Australians.... GO YOU REDBACKS!!!
